For Writer's Month 2022 Day 13: Fairy Realm
Rekker knew his brother was ambivalent, in the best of times, toward his birthday. He hated being in the spotlight like that. However, Rekker didn't care and it made for a fun shopping trip with Bjorn earlier in the week. He had forced the Swede to keep his mouth shut about it under penalty of a lot of upset, though he didn't think Bjorn would divulge the secret. Underneath it all, he thought Bjorn was as much of a quiet prankster as Rekker was and that was going to cause chaos today. The Ginger had sent Bjorn off to keep Erik busy for at least a half hour and then to come back later, with Erik in tow.
Rekker barged into his brother's hotel room without knocking and frowned at the fact he was working. Undeterred he dropped the three large packages down right on top of his older brother's work. Robert sliding off his glasses with a sigh.
“What is this?”
“Happy birthday, you old grouch!” Rekker was laughing and took Robert's tea to drink it.
“You're the grouch.” Robert stared at his redheaded brother and was both glad to see him in a good mood and utterly put out by the celebration of his birthday. “What is all of this?”
“Gifts.” Rekker pulled out the chair at the table and started to chuckle.
“Do I even want to know?” Robert closed his laptop to set it aside when he realized this wasn't going to end until he dealt with whatever was in these bundles.
“Of course.” Rekker continued to grin. “I've always been good with gifts.
On that, Robert couldn't argue. Rekker did have a way of picking out gifts that wer good; functionally and aesthetically, when that mattered. Robert gave up and opened the first bundle to find a button down floral poet shirt. This was something he would wear and couldn't avoid smiling.
“Are you going to try it on?” Rekker had ulterior motives but he was doing his best to keep that under wraps.
“When I'm done here.” The next package was heavy and Robert gave his brother a suspicious look before opening it. The leather pants inside were not his style but they weren't that bad, cut like tight jeans. There were worse things to be found in the package. “What are these?”
The younger brother shrugged. “You were always complaining about stains and the way booze soaked into your pants when someone spilled it.” Rekker had thought of this response though it was not the reason he bought them. No, he got them after overhearing his brother's partner talking to others about Robert's tight pants and seeing him in leather like the more glam musicians. Of course, Rekker was not going to hint at that at all.
Robert nodded and saw the utility of the gift. He couldn't argue with the logic. The last bundle was enormous, like a big pillow. The sheer size had the older Brit hesitating. As he opened it and saw all the green, soft wool tumble out he eyed his brother. Even more so when he noticed the green embroidered leaves around the edges.
“What the bloody hell?”
Rekker went into full on giggles. “All the gifts can't be utilitarian.”
“No, forbid you be completely serious about anything.” Robert sighed.
“Go try them on.” Rekker encouraged, especially when he felt the phone in his pocket vibrate. The cue that Bjorn was about to bring Erik up.
Robert didn't know anything about that as he went into the bedroom to try on the shirt and the pants. “I'm not wearing that cloak!” He called from the other room.
“Come on! I had someone down at the costuming studio for the theater make it.” Rekker called back while trying to be serious. “Doesn't Erik want you to be some fairytale Druid or something?”
“Who the hell....?” Robert didn't even get it out while dressing.
“Everyone knows, between Erik and Hunter!” Rekker took the cloak into the bedroom and offered it to Robert.
“Come on. Just try it on.” Rekker was pulling puppy eyes on his older brother. Even with both of them in their forties it still worked.
“Fine.” Robert took it and slung the cloak around his shoulders. While he clasped it Rekker worked on getting his brother's blonde curls out of the way. Bjorn knew to just come in, door unlocked and Rekker was almost vibrating with anticipation as he stepped back.
“You look like a rock druid.” Rekker teased as his brother turned to look in the long mirror hanging on the back of the bathroom door. The ginger was waiting and trying not to let his excitement show. This was going to be priceless.
